Art Discussion Group - Malta

The History of the Art Discussion Group

In February/March of 1987, on the initiative of Paul Asciak and with the full collaboration of E. V. Borg (co-founder), a group of artists banded together and started meeting at the premises of Din L-Art Ħelwa in Valletta. The Group became known as the Art Discussion Group (ADG). The meeting of members became a regular feature and up to May 1998 the Group Committee organised 80 meetings or events. The last circular was issued on Thursday 7th May 1998 and the meeting dedicated to Neville Ferry (b.1945), the ceramist took place on Thursday 14th May at 6.30pm.The activities involved meeting artists, holding lectures on art, seminars, and visiting artists in their studio. The latter activity was always well received and attended.

On the insistence of old members, E. V. Borg decided to organise a dinner on Thursday 5th January 2010 at Tartarun Restaurant in M’Xlokk to revive the group and kindle enthusiasm among artists and art lovers to join ranks and work together. Since then a small committee was formed and events have been taking  place introducing local and international artists.

The ADG is a Group of people: artists, lovers of art and culture and those interested in aesthetics attracted by common interests to promote art, socialize and share ideas. In their diversity there is unity and union. The ADG intends to bring together artists and members of the public to widen the possibility of communication and contact by organizing cultural and artistic events: exhibitions, lectures, seminars and visits to artists’ studios.

The Art Discussion Group was formally accepted as an NGO on 30th November 2011.
