Art Discussion Group - Malta

123rd Meeting Artist

Darren Spiteri - Fired Earth

The 123rd Art Discussion Group Meeting will be held on Thursday 30th October 2014 at 19.30hrs at MISCO OFFICE (first floor) in Fino Building in Notabile Road, Mriehel.

ADG is inviting Darren Spiteri (1977-) undoubtedly talented, versatile, deeply involved and applied reaches out to society and tries hard to capture the disillusion, melancholy and despair of fellow men. The artist who succeeds to kindle in our heart compassion and sympathy for those less fortunate will answer questions from the floor regarding his vision, concept, and career. He will also elaborate about technique and exhibit some of his original work.

The poor ‘Violin Player’ is the most expressive of all his works. Unkempt and barefoot he stands abashed in his loneliness dressed in a tattered suit that had seen better days with a worn out bow tie out of tune with his misfortune.

Seemingly trying not to attract attention he holds his violin close to his body with closed downcast eyes in a manner of a failed musician rather than in the role of a beggar. The melancholy expressed immediately works on our emotion and plays on our compassion and sympathy.

Quite surprisingly he is fond of modelling his figures in a crouching, closed position, often makes reference to sad, masked clowns, groups in a huddled position or sliding from the vertical as if shot at by a firing squad, bony reclining nudes and a series of crucifixes in carved wood.

The ‘Poor Clochard’ sitting crouched and lonely at a street corner is also barefoot and must have drunk life’s poison to the very dregs. It is hardly a coincidence that two different instances of emarginated or ostracised persons caught the artist’s imagination and fantasy if not by mere choice of subject.

Born in 1977 Darren was deeply impressed by popular feasts and manifestations such as Carnival with Carnival floats, Christmas and cribs, Good Friday and processional statues with the rites and ritual of pageantry. His professional work as a cabinet maker and woodworker brought him in contact with tutors specializing in various crafts such as ceramics, wood carving, artist-painters, modellers in clay and mould makers. His natural talent for craft in various media: stone, clay, wood, resin, paint and gesso stimulate his curiosity and inquisitive nature to experiment and learn through trial and error.

He loves popular subjects and themes inspired by life around him. The artist has participated in various collective exhibitions organized by different groups such as Art Club 2000, the Malta Society of Arts and the Art Discussion Group. In 2004 he won the Silver Palette Competition organized by the Malta Society of Arts while in February/March 2012 he organized his first personal exhibition at ‘ir-Razzett tal-Markiż, Mosta.

Earlier this year he became a member of the Art Discussion Group and in May 2014 he took part in a large ADG Collective Art Exhibition and included in a related publication that illustrates his work and vision. The artist is presently preparing for a personal exhibition at ir-Razzett tal-Markiż, Mosta in November 2014 thus ADG will orientate our members for this event.

ADG invites all members and their friends and the public to enjoy meeting Darren Spiteri and share with him the pleasure and enjoyment that art instills.
