Art Discussion Group - Malta

140th Meeting Artist

Annemarie Hoogvliet-Weijers

The 140th Art Discussion Group Meeting will be held on Tuesday 21st June 2016 at 19.30hrs at MISCO OFFICES (first floor) in Fino Building in Notabile Road, Mriehel. ADG is inviting Annemarie Hoogvliet-Weijers, a painter who organized a personal exhibition in November 2013 at the Mqabba ‘Old Hospital – Art & Cultural Centre’ where she lives. Actually she is preparing a retrospective at Cavalieri Art Hotel (4 – 31 July 2016). The artist is an avid traveller and is inspired by places she visits.

Her romantic work, dynamic, energetic and strong, demonstrates her love for animals and nature. She participated in many collective art exhibitions in Holland, Malta, Dubai and Sharajah and won several awards. Her solo personal exhibitions in the United Arab Emirates and Malta were successful and very well received. Her work is illustrated in a professionally produced catalogue: Kunst Met Een Gouden Randje in Alkmaar Holland in 2011.

Annemarie was born in Holland in a small village south of Rotterdam. Her family loved music and creativity and she was brought up in the Dutch countryside among rivers that nurtured a love and a spirit for nature. Since she experienced farm life she has a special attraction to flowers, birds, fish and water.

Such inspiration lent a sense of freedom and liberty to her expression. Annemarie started as a fashion designer and about 25 years ago she started painting. When she moved to Malta in the early 90’s her artistic taste developed, but the real change came when she moved to Dubai.

Her painting addiction became an obsession on experiencing Arab horses, camels and the architecture of the Gulf. Sights, sun-light and colours overwhelmed her and she ‘became a different person altogether. Her paintings of horses show feeling, sentiment and emotion and loves painting cows and goats with great concentration and involvement. She has a series of flower and fish which are bright, colourful and dynamic. Hawks painted on silk show an unusual skill and talent and great freedom.

Annemarie lived abroad for 27 years in England, United Arab Emirates and Malta. Her works have found a home in China, South Africa, Oman, U.K., United Arab Emirates, Holland and Malta. She has studied various techniques and handles several media as well. In Dubai she became a member of art groups and used to work in plein air. In Malta she is a member of the Malta Society of Arts at De La Salle Palace, Valletta and of the Art Discussion Group.

Annemarie’s work has been featured in Gulf Today, Al Kaleej, Connector, Hollandse Nieuwe and the local Sunday Times. Her paintings were shown on Education 22, a local TV programme.

ADG invites all members and their friends and the public to enjoy meeting Annemarie Hoogvliet-Weijers who is ready to share her work and answer any question on vision, concept, aesthetics and technique.
