Art Discussion Group - Malta

Censu Fenech - Sculptor

The Art Discussion Group (ADG) will be holding its 162nd meeting on Tuesday 22nd January 2019 at 19.30hrs at the ‘Ċentru Parrokkjali’, 36 Idmejda St., Balzan (next to the Good Shepherd Church). Ċensu Fenech will be meeting our members and friends to discuss his new work. A power-point will include his new work and also represent a retrospective selection of past sculpture. The presentation of the images will be followed by an analysis, a discussion and question-time. Ċensu Fenech’s work is much appreciated abroad and it has been given ample promotion.

There is a sense of Calatrava’s architectural dynamic flying concrete structures in Censu’s works. They are architectural constructions that intimate a lyrical and poetic rhythm. There is a fine sense of music in his volumes whether in stucco, stone or ceramics.

In stucco the works are light and dynamic with flowing movement; in stone the works are solid and at times heavy; in ceramics vivid colour dominates the structures with a vertical lift. The repetition of a module to create a pattern and rhythm is the basis of his concepts. His vision is quite lyrical.

Censu spent his working career at the local drydocks as dock master. Surprisingly he discovered that he had a talent for sculpture. After attending the local School of Art he obtained a diploma in sculpture with distinction. In 2014 he won the Malta Society of Arts National Competition: the overall prize in the painting and sculpture section. In 2016 Censu received the Honorary Diploma of the Berliner Art Prize. He works in both stucco and ceramics.

In sculpture he loves working in an abstract idiom. He believes that an artist should allow his work to speak for him. If truely eloquent his expression would become universal.

After he retired from work he attended ceramic classes at Targa Gap, Mosta for two years. Being prolific he produced a series of ceramic sculptures, working with clay and building structures with chicken wire and a mixture of cement and marble powder. In 2015 he was featured in a New York publication called ‘International Contemporary Artists’. Later he was invited to exhibit his work in several European cities and in New York, Florida and California in USA.

In 2016 he was again featured in a Berlin publication called ‘Awarded Art’. The award was in the form of two personal stamps by the German Post Office. Last year he was featured in an Italian Publication called ‘The Best 2018 Modern and Contemporary Artists’. In December last year Ċensu Fenech was requested by Francesco Saverio Russo to take part in the new International Contemporary Art Book that will include his sculpture.

ADG invites its members, their friends and the general public to this cultural and artistic event that would interest those with a love for sculpture and modelling technique.
