134th Meeting Artist

Stephen Grima

painter and a buon fresco artist

The 134th Art Discussion Group Meeting will be held on Wednesday 9th December 2015 at 19.30hrs at MISCO OFFICE (first floor) in Fino Building in Notabile Road, Mriehel. ADG is inviting Stephen Grima (b.1979) a painter and a buon fresco artist. The artist will answer questions about vision, concept and technique and discuss aspects of some of his work.

Stephen’s expression is ‘contagious and overwhelming’, bold and forceful, incisive and panoramic. He is in empathy with the seagull as he soars and glides dizzily on the wings of poetry.

From the terrace of his studio carved in bed-rock above Għadira Bay Stephen Grima is inspired by a bird’s eye view of the vast space below him. Struck by such beauty he feels in perfect harmony with nature and identifies with the flight movements of the seagull.

The artist in his intensity of feeling becomes the seagull as he hovers or swoops on yachts with billowing sails tacking against the wind or intrigued by the elliptical concave space of boats; skims over rough seas or glides over crested foamy waves, swoops on fields and rubble wall, on cubic farmsteads and stable, on steep cliff and rough terrain. This look from above though quite unusual is hardly less impressive than the evocation of space.

Stephen Grima fuses an incised strong and powerful line imbued with dynamic movement with a romantic and expressionistic warm palette to capture hedonistic flashes of immediate human feelings and experience. He is a poet with a contagious joie de vivre in perfect unison with nature who magically suggests the breeze or the wind caressing the face, the swell of the waves, the wonderful flight of the seagull and fluttering sails.

The zest in his design stems from his deep knowledge of technical drawing, his study of technology and his acute experience in fresco painting. His colourful palette is inspired by nature around him, by the steep cliffs and ridges around Mellieħa, by the castellated towering parish red-domed church, by terraced fields in chequered and varigated tones, by the blue sea and sky, yellow sand and monumental open space. He feels in complete synochrony with Mellieħa. In actuality he is an innocent child, a lover of nature.

ADG invites all members and their friends and the public to enjoy meeting Stephen Grima who is ready to share his work and answer any query on aesthetics and technique.
